Buin Zoo

On the actual day of Dieciocho (the 18th) nothing is open.  Nothing.  You will find some gas stations open and perhaps a restaurant here and there but, for the most part, the whole country of Chile is at home or someone else's home celebrating.  So imagine my surprise when I was searching for things to do on our 10 day staycation that the Buin Zoo would be open.  Since B and I have never been (the girls had gone with Nana and Grampa in April - and loved it) we had a definitely plan for the day.

Buin is a very small town about 45 minutes from our house and it happens to have the best zoo around.   And since we were going on a holiday, and this is Chile, we knew it would be empty.  As opposed to a holiday in the U.S. where it would be packed.

We spent the whole day and brought home two very tired little girls.  But two very happy girls.  They loved that the place was almost empty.  It allowed them to get up close and personal (well, as close as they will let you) and they could spend as much time as they wanted at each spot.  Unfortunately for B and I, MadHatter's favorite spot is the reptiles (followed closely by the insects) so we spent a lot of time in places that gave us the creeps.  Good thing Stinkerbell likes the furrier animals and we got to spend some quality time there too.

All in all, the perfect way to spend a day on staycation.

They don't have a real elephant, due to the fact that many elephants have fatal accidents in captivity.

They conducted an expirement in a lab.  They let the spiders, without any outside influence, create their webs.  This is what they looked like.
They gave the spiders drugs.  Each web is what the spider then created while on Meth, Hashish, caffeine and LSD.  Wow right?
Take us home, Stinkerbell.
